Do not start a lighting improvement project by shopping for fixtures. Start by finding the failure.
“Too dark” might mean the menu is unreadable at two tables, the threshold transition is harsh, the back bar is brighter than every face, or one bare source sits in a seated sightline. Each problem needs a different first move. More light everywhere is the most expensive way to avoid deciding which one you have.
This 30-minute restaurant lighting audit is a Resto Glow diagnostic method. It is not a code inspection, photometric survey, electrical assessment, or substitute for a lighting professional. It gives an owner or manager a repeatable walk, a short action log, and enough evidence to brief the right next person.
What you need
- one phone with the same light-meter app used every time;
- painter’s tape or removable floor markers;
- a clipboard or shared form;
- one colleague to sit, read, walk, and observe;
- a representative menu, plated dish or colour sample, and normal table setting;
- the actual service lighting scene.
Run the walk 30 to 45 minutes before doors, after every circuit, portable lamp, screen, sign, and decorative source has been set exactly as it will be for guests. If lunch and late dinner are materially different, repeat the same route in both scenes on another day.
The six-station route
The route moves in the same order a guest or plate moves: street to threshold, threshold to table, table to bar, pass to room, room to support spaces. Mark the fixed observation points so the next audit can repeat them.

For every observation, mark Pass, Watch, or Act.
- Pass: the condition works in the tested scene. Keep the baseline.
- Watch: it works now but is inconsistent, fragile, or dependent on one temporary choice. Recheck at the next audit.
- Act: it affects legibility, comfort, service, safety, colour, or the intended atmosphere. Assign a specific next step.
These are workflow labels, not compliance ratings.
Station 1: street and threshold
Stand across the street or at the normal approach. Is the entrance visually identifiable? Can you tell the restaurant is open without the sign becoming the brightest object in the block? Photograph the façade and first interior view with the same phone exposure behaviour you will use next time.
Walk inside at a normal pace. Notice whether the first few metres feel like a controlled transition or a sudden visual drop. At dinner, a bright host screen, exposed lamp, or overlit vestibule can make the dining room beyond look darker than it is. In daylight, a very dark threshold can hide steps, handles, and the host position.
The first move is usually scene and shielding work: reduce the bright object, lift the intermediate layer, or aim the entrance light at faces and surfaces rather than eyes. Do not change code-required lighting or egress conditions based on this editorial audit; route those questions to the responsible professional and local requirements.
Station 2: the dining grid
Choose four fixed tables: brightest-looking, darkest-looking, most typical, and most complained-about. Place the same phone flat and face-up on the same marked point at table height. Record relative readings in the same scene.
Phone apps can disagree across devices and are not calibrated compliance instruments. Now look beyond the readings. Is the brightest table desirable, or is it simply under an exposed downlight? Is the darkest table intimate, or does every guest reach for a phone torch? Does one table sit under a pendant pool while its neighbour receives only ambient spill?

Station 3: menu, food, and faces
Sit at the darkest and most typical tables. Ask the colleague to read the smallest meaningful menu text without a phone light. The test is not whether the manager, who knows the menu, can guess it. Use a guest-age range and visual ability appropriate to the restaurant, and record the actual difficulty rather than a yes/no performance claim.
Place a representative dish or a small colour kit on the table: something red, green, white, and skin-toned. Photograph it from the normal seat. Then look at the person opposite. The table fails if the plate is beautiful but the face disappears, or if the face is comfortable but the menu blooms with reflected glare.

Station 4: bar and back bar
Audit four planes separately:
- the guest’s bar top;
- the bartender’s task surface;
- the bottle or display wall;
- the guest’s seated sightline.
A bar can have plenty of light and still fail because it is all on the bottles. Watch the bartender read a ticket, pour, garnish, and use the card terminal. Then sit in three bar seats and look toward the work zone. Flag a bare source, a reflected source in a mirror, a screen that forces constant adaptation, or a pendant that hides the person serving.
The first move may be re-aiming a display light, lowering a screen, shielding a source, or separating task and display control. Station 5: pass and service paths
Stand where the expediter stands, then carry a plate from the pass to the darkest table. The pass needs task visibility and accurate food colour, but a bright opening can flatten an intimate dining room or put staff in silhouette from the guest side.
Check the ticket rail, heat-lamp area, shelf edges, floor transition, and the first turn into the room. Note shadows caused by the person doing the work, not only by the empty architecture. Then look from the dining room back toward the opening and see whether the task source is visible.
Lighting around exposed food and clean equipment can fall under locally adopted food-code provisions, including protective requirements for particular bulbs and locations. Station 6: restroom, patio, and egress handoff
Finish with spaces that change how the dining room is remembered.
At the restroom mirror, check the face rather than the ceiling. Downlight alone can create deep eye shadows even when the room reads bright. Check the cubicle, basin, floor, and door hardware separately, and flag any damaged or unstable source.
At the patio, look for a coherent handoff from inside to outside. One brilliant wall pack or exposed string-light source can erase the lower table layer. Test the route after dark, including thresholds and changes in level, under the requirements that apply to the site.
For egress and emergency lighting, record visible damage or obstruction and escalate. Do not use this 30-minute method to approve, alter, or test a life-safety system.
Turn observations into the right first move
Every Act item needs one owner, one next action, and one recheck date.

The first move should be the smallest reversible action that tests the cause. Re-aim before replacing. Isolate a source before adding one. Sample one portable lamp before buying twenty. Change one scene and repeat the route before redesigning the ceiling.
Keep one page, not a forgotten report
The useful audit record contains:
- date, time, daypart, weather, and named lighting scene;
- the same four dining-table readings and photographs;
- Pass, Watch, or Act at each station;
- exact fixture or circuit involved;
- owner, next action, and recheck date;
- links to any manufacturer document, work order, or professional finding.
Run the route after a material lighting change, a source-replacement batch, a seasonal daylight shift, or a recurring guest or staff complaint. A quarterly comparison is a practical starting cadence for many rooms, but your change rate and risk should determine it.
Shop only after the audit names the gap
If the table plane fails but the ceiling plan works, a documented portable layer may be the least disruptive sample; browse table lamps. If the pool misses the table, review pendant lights only after checking aim, height, beam, and existing controls. If faces and walls disappear, investigate the perimeter layer in wall lights.
